About this scholarship

The Eagle Scout Scholarship was started in 2021 by Jay Mechling of the Class of '63. He is a former professor of American Studies at the University of California, Davis and the published author of a book and several articles about Scouting. In his own words:

"Even people who have not had a Scouting experience know what a singular achievement it is for a young man (and now a young woman) to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. I am an Eagle Scout (1959, Troop 321) born and raised in Miami Beach. Scouting is basic to who I am as a person, and I know that my love of teaching (a university professor for 38 years) is rooted in the pleasure of teaching a younger Scout how to tie a knot, or how to build a fire, or how to treat an injury, or how to distinguish the venomous snakes from the safe ones — the pleasure of giving someone else skills and knowledge."

"I and a group of other Miami Beach Senior High School alumni who are Eagle Scouts ('Once an Eagle, always an Eagle') decided to work with the MBSHS Alumni Association to establish a scholarship for college-bound Beach High seniors who are Eagle Scouts or who have a Scouting background and embody the elements of leadership and character Scouting teaches."
